Police searching for suspects after downtown mugging

Police are searching for a group of people after a man was assaulted near the railroad station downtown late last night.

According to Riverhead police, a victim of the assault was found bleeding from the face and head after police arrived to the scene at 303 Osborn Avenue around 11:30 p.m. His injuries were considered non life-threatening in nature, and he was treated at Peconic Bay Medical Center.

An investigation revealed that the man who had been assaulted was robbed of his cell phone by four individuals — two black men and two black females — who fled the area after “repeatedly striking the victim about the face and head with an unknown object.”

A search of the area was conducted by police and K-9 units, though none of the suspects were located.

A string of assaults had occurred on or near the railroad tracks last year — often times including Hispanic victims — though no major incidents have been reported as of late. Thursday night’s victim was a Hispanic man.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed the crime or would have information about the crime is asked to call police at 727-4500, ext. 332.

Voters in local fire districts will go to polls Tuesday, Dec. 8, to vote for fire commissioners. Wading River is the only local district with a contested election.

The elected commissioners run the fire district, which sets the budget and related taxes for the fire department.

While fire chiefs are chosen by department members only, all registered voters can cast ballots for commissioners.

• In Wading River, incumbent Mike Harrigan is being challenged for a five-year term by Jim Meier, a former commissioner who lost his bid for re-election in 2014. Voting is open from 2 to 9 p.m. at fire headquarters, 1503 North Country Road.

• In Riverhead, incumbent John Tradeski Jr. is running unopposed for a five-year term. Voting runs from 1 to 9 p.m. at the main firehouse, 540 Roanoke Ave.

• In Jamesport, two incumbent commissioners are running unopposed. Lee Anthony is seeking a five-year term and Harold “Duffy” Griffiths III is running to complete the remaining three years of the term vacated by Joel Lazarus, to which he was appointed. Polls will be open from 3 to 9 p.m. at the firehouse, 25 Manor Lane.

• In Flanders, incumbent Joe Cavaluzzi chose not to seek re-election and Frank Belson will run unopposed for a five-year term. The firehouse, on Firehouse Lane off Flanders Road, will be open for voting from 6 to 9 p.m.

• In Manorville, incumbent William Hille is unopposed in his bid for a five-year term. Voting takes place from 3 to 9 p.m. at the firehouse, 14 Silas Carter Road.

The Manorville ballot also carries a proposition about whether to amend the district’s Length of Service Award Program by raising the maximum service award available to participants from $20 per month to $30 per month.

The award program, which is aimed at facilitating department recruitment, provides qualified volunteers with pension-like payments based on the duration of their service.

Update: Fire at former 84 Lumber building could be arson, police say

A fire that broke out at the former 84 Lumber building on West Main Street in Riverhead Wednesday afternoon is a “crime scene” and is being investigated as a possible arson, Riverhead police said.

Riverhead Sgt. Edward Frost said detectives will be working with the Suffolk County Arson Squad to determine the cause of the fire.

Firefighters from multiple departments battled the blaze after it started at about 2:20 p.m.; of the property’s three metal buildings, the middle one had visible damage from the fire. Multiple fire trucks from Riverhead Fire Department responded to the burning building and began putting out the fire after the 911 call came in.

Jamesport Fire Department and the Riverhead Fire Marshal were also called to help, while firefighters from Ridge Fire Department were on standby at the scene with a rapid intervention team to assist. Ambulances teams also came to the fire scene, but no injuries were reported, authorities said.

Authorities used a payloader to remove concrete blocks from the building. Bill Oberhausen, manager of Fairfield Apartments across the street from the fire, said the blocks were installed to keep out skateboarding young adults who had been entering the vacant building to skate.

The 84 Lumber building was built in 1984 and has been closed since 2011; the company has since said they left town due to the poor economy. In October, representatives for the company told the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals they hope to reopen the shuttered storefront.

That 84 Lumber proposal was due to be voted on at tomorrow’s ZBA meeting.

Route 25 remained closed from the Tanger Outlets entrance to Kroemer Avenue as first investigators roped off the area in crime scene tape. Authorities haven’t yet determined what started the fire.

Southampton police add two squad cars to Flanders area patrols

It seems the requests of some Southampton Town community members have not fallen on deaf ears.

After residents from the Flanders-Riverside-Northampton area demanded an increased police presence from the Town Board and continued to express their frustrations over a recent crime wave, they are finally getting their wishes: A new plan is already in practice to ensure that at least two squad cars are in the northwestern section of town at all times.

Starting last Wednesday, Southampton police are keeping one squad car in the Flanders area and one in the Riverside-Northampton area during evening hours, said Police Chief Robert Pearce. Additionally, whenever the Community Response Unit is staffed, it will be stationed in the area as well.

“It’s a huge relief, and it’s such a testament to the good that can come out of our hamlet working together,” said Ron Fisher, president of the Bayview Pines Civic Association. “The quality-of-life issues that they’re addressing are what we’ve been [requesting] for three months, and now they’re doing it. It’s wonderful.”

Community members had been demanding greater police presence in the town’s northwestern neighborhoods after a string of crimes, including more than 70 car break-ins, a home invasion and a murder.

Southampton Town had initially unveiled a plan to reshuffle resources and increase staffing for the CRU, but that will not take place until mid-January and some residents were concerned it was not enough. Now, they are happy that something is being done immediately.

“We had people from everywhere come to that Town Board meeting [on Nov. 24] and ask the board for more help,” Mr. Fisher said. “Clearly it worked.”

Chief Pearce also said the Town Board allocated money in its 2016 budget to hire two additional police officers, one of which has already joined the force. The plan announced in November will move patrol officers to 12-hour shifts and allocate six officers to the CRU.

“The more resources I have, the greater the ability to have two units in the [Flanders-Riverside-Northampton] area at all times,” the chief said. “The union is very supportive of it. I’m supportive of it. Hopefully it works out.”

Mr. Fisher said he’s already feeling the effects of the added police cars in the area.

“It actually went into effect last Wednesday,” he said. “So already, people have noticed an increase in police presence. I myself noticed a police car patrolling Old Quogue Road, patrolling south of [Route] 24, north of [Route] 24, in and out of neighborhoods.”

He praised Chief Pearce for the work put into meeting the community’s needs.

“Chief Pearce and the [Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association] were really supportive,” he said. “They understood the need for policing and they agreed with us. It was just a matter of getting support from the board.”
